Veterinary Healthcare
The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) is dedicated to animal welfare, which includes all aspects of primate conservation and health.
PASA is cognizant of the fact that animal health and human health are inherently and inextricably linked, and PASA places great emphasis on the need to control the bushmeat trade and the diseases that often result. It also places a premium on the training and promotion of national veterinary healthcare staff.
In 2003, PASA initiated the PASA Veterinary Healthcare Workshop, an annual conference designed to raise the capacity and skills and sanctuary medical staff. The inaugural workshop was held in Uganda in 2003, with subsequent workshops in Congo (2004), Cameroon (2005), Sierra Leone (2006) and Cameroon (2007).
The PASA 2008 Veterinary Healthcare Workshop will be staged November 17-22 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo.
PASA and its donors support sanctuary veterinary healthcare protocols through the distribution of medical equipment and reference guides. In 2004, PASA produced the PASA Veterinary Healthcare Manual (in both English and French), the first comprehensive primate care guide specifically tailored to the injuries, illnesses and crises inherent in African sanctuaries.
