Education

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) recognizes that the future success and effectiveness of its members lies in the ability to promote a unified conservation education message. It is estimated that over 300,000 visitors pass through PASA member sanctuaries each year, and given that many are schoolchildren, the sanctuaries are in a unique position to educate and inform the next generation. PASA members are encouraged to design, implement, and support education programs through their sanctuaries, with an emphasis on the protection of great apes and other primates, local wildlife and wild spaces.

In 2003, PASA initiated the PASA Education Workshop, an annual gathering of all the sanctuary education officers for a week of training, seminars, and exercises designed to create the most effective presentation possible. The inaugural workshop was held in Zambia in 2003, with subsequent workshops in Cameroon (2004 and 2007) and Uganda (2005 and 2006).

The PASA 2008 Education Workshop will be held December 1-5 in Nairobi, Kenya.

PASA and its donors also support sanctuary education officers through the distribution of materials, books and posters, and the annual attendance by a representative at the American Zoological Association education training course. In 2002, PASA also released the PASA Education Manual, available in both English and French.
